Kick Ass Offense

Brad Childress a few years back called said the Vikings had a "kick ass offense." At the time we had Brad Johnson, Chester Taylor, and Marcus Robinson as our QB, RB, and WR. We still don't have much firepower at QB, but we have very explosive players at RB, and WR now.
We don't have much excitement with our sports teams around here. The Twins have a way of doing things that puts insomniacs to sleep. The Wild are about as fun to watch as a WNBA practice. And the Timberwolves, aww screw the Timberwolves. My point is we are flyover country. We are so reserved here in Minnesota.
But you can no longer call the Vikings boring. I love their first round pick today. We already have the best running back in the NFL, and now we've added an extremely versatile threat at wide receiver. This was so not expected from Brad Childress. So I will give him credit for thinking outside of his box. I know, I know, Percy Harvin has character issues. What 19,20, and 21 year old doesn't? Every single friend I had at that age had character issues, and we were broke. Throw in some money and fame, and saying we had character issues would have been being polite. So let's assume he'll keep his head on straight, and he has to, because since he failed a drug test at the combine that is strike one. But he has the potential to break plays the way AP does. I think he might have a game this year with like 3 catches 129 yards, 2 touchdowns, and a kickoff return for a touchdown. For years now the Vikings have not been a threat at all in the return game. That changed today. Some of the guys on TV compared him to Steve Smith. I'll take that.
If Childress can become creative, which is a major if. The Vikings should be fun to watch. They have players now that can take a broken play and find seams and gaps and turn it into something. I would love to see plays with Taylor, Peterson, and Harvin all in the game at the same time. We're going to go into the year with QB being our biggest question mark again. So if we can't get decent play out of that position, all of this is a mute point. At least it will be fun to watch. Remember what happened last time we drafted a receiver in the first round with character issues.

Politics

I loved the comments on the last blog. At the same time that is exactly what's wrong with politics. No one can give a straight answer. The fact is this. There was an election, somebody obviously had to end up with more votes. It looks like it's Al Franken at this point, but we are going to battle it out in court. How does Norm Coleman justify this? He was the clown who stood up after the election and said, "If he was in Al Franken's position, he wouldn't appeal the decision." That is not a direct quote. I have no real sources to back it up, but I remember something to that effect.
So my point is why doesn't he practice what he preaches. I don't care about all of this bullshit with military votes, and absentee ballots. That is all just political jargon, for being a poor sport. Are we really supposed to believe that these ballots are so critical that we need to delay the results more than 5 months. If that is the case why don't we take that into account for each and every election we had. Wouldn't that sway more then just the battle for a spot in the senate.
My whole point is not a battle for republicans or democrats. It is for the a system that works. And some of you can not look outside your political leaning to see that. Some of you have presented facts that I can not dispute. But isn't that what judges and lawyers are for. Why does it take 5+ months to figure it out. An additional run off election is not the answer. What would make us think that, that would give us different results. We should just figure out how to do this right. We are supposed to be the most powerful country in the world.
All I see is a system that doesn't work. How come no one is being held accountable. It must be somebody's job to make sure this stuff works. If you are not intelligent enough to fill out a ballot, or smart enough to return it in time, than piss off.
Get a system that works. I don't want to here your left or right side. I just want to know that we can run an election that works. It didn't work this time, so every person involved should lost their job. We're paying these people to take ballots count them and declare a winner. That is obviously to sophisticated for them. So find a handful of competent people, put them in position to get this done.

Norm Coleman

What the hell is wrong with Norm Coleman. Why won't he lose? This guy lost an election. Judges told him he lost, and he still won't go away. I think JC himself needs to stricken him dead, just to get the point across. I thought this guy is supposed to be an intelligent mayor/senator/politician. He seems like an ignorant clown/little baby. I haven't followed this any closer that I follow the Lynx, but at least when the Lynx lose, they accept it. I don't get what his deal is. What does he think is going to happen. The citizens and the judges might change their minds? YOU LOST ASSHOLE . . GO HOME!

The other thing I've noticed is that the government seems to be functioning fine without either one of them, so are they really needed?

Dear Wild

Dear Wild

I am writing you this letter because I feel like our relationship is at a crossroad. We've been through so much together that I thought I needed to express my feeling towards you.

When you walked into my life in the fall of 2000, it was love at first site. I was coming off of a bad relationship with my previous squad and was finally ready to get back into hockey. Man was it fun at first. That first win at home, and the 6-0 beat down of my ex was wonderful. You were so young, shiny, and new. I thought that this would be a life long relationship. Things kept getting better too. I didn't measure everything by wins. You were fun. I watched Gaborik grow into a superstar. I saw Matty Johnson beating up everybody. I was there with 18,000 plus every night. I listened as you told me about the future. We weren't building for a one or two year run. We were going to be competitive year in and year out. We weren't going to jeopardize our future with rent a players. You told me about the system. And man it sounded good.

That third year was the peak of our relationship. You showed me what a great system could do. The spring of 2003 is a time I will never forget. Coming back from 3-1 not once but twice in the same postseason. When Brunette scored that overtime winner ending Patrick Roy's career, I thought it couldn't get any better than that. The sad part is I was right it really hasn't.

Following that season, we had hold-outs causing us a last place finish.

The next year was cancelled due to greed.

We followed that up with another last place finish.

Then we started spending money and bringing in guys. We made the playoffs and it looked the future was bright. I was told about the great young talent we were producing. I was told system this, and system that. I believed in everything you said. We made the playoffs and lost to eventual Cup champions, the Might Ducks.

We went into the next season with high hopes. I was told all we needed was home ice. Then we went out and got it. Then we were up in the playoffs 2-1 to the hated Avalanche. I thought this was the beginning of everything you talked about. The annual success. The playoff runs. The system was working. That was just a mirage. We ended up losing to the lanche'.

We came into this year, and I didn't know what to expect. You turned down trade offers that included our so called young talent. At that point I was starting to doubt your intelligence in this area. Your young talent, was young, but I don't think we had the same definition of talented. I started wondering how you planned on winning games, when you didn't have guys that could score. Our best player was constant trade speculation, and then he went down with another injury. Then our next best player wasn't good enough. Yeah he did all of the little things so well. But the problem was he didn't do the big things well enough. We're a team that does the little things well, we are a team of almosts, and not quites. And now we come to find out our steady rock, our coach has had enough. He's been there since day one, and he wants nothing to do with you anymore.

So where does that leave us? What am I supposed to believe. Is our young talent going to get better, or just older? Will our best player continue have a peak of 60 some points. Why should I stay in this relationship? All you've done is taken. When will I see the return on my investment? I continue to support you, I have season tickets, I have your new home jersey, I have a your old home jersey. I have done everything you've asked of me. I don't want to hear about the little things. I don't want a guy to lead the league in hits. I want him to lead the league in scoring. You have a fighter that doesn't get into fights, and is a liability on the ice. I want 1 captain for an entire season. I don't want our forwards to be so willing to go into the corners, when they're not willing to go in front of the net. I don't stay at home defensemen. I want offensive minded defensemen. We're at a crossroads here. You're not the young, shiny, and new toy now. The NHL has changed, and so have I. So the question is when will you?

2009 Baseball Preview

Baseball is my favorite sport. There are games every night. You can dip in and dip out as you please. You can take a hour nap, and might not miss a thing. You can go to the games, and not take out a loan. The season spans three seasons, spring, fall, and summer. So I've decided to do a baseball preview this year. We can look back in October and see how I did. Feel free to throw some predictions of your own, disagree, or agree in the comment section. That way we'll see who is truly a great baseball mind.
FIVE THOUGHTS ABOUT THE TWINS
1. Joe Mauer's injury scares me a little. The fact that no one is picking a return date, or even really sure what the problem is. There is no question that he's the key to success for the Twins and the best catcher in baseball, so to say we need a healthy Joe Mauer is a colossal understatement.
2. I think Morneau is growing into a true leader and superstar. I think he is our best player, and the leader in the clubhouse. I think he has a presence about him, and leads by example. I think the thing that sticks out for him, is he's not afraid to be that guy. It seems like Mauer is fine just being the hometown hero, batting champ. And that's fine too. They seem to work well together.
3. Delmon Young will have a good year. I'm talking .295-.300 with 20 HR's and 85 RBI's.
4. Carlos Gomez is going to be really good. It might not be this year. But he will hit 30 home runs, and he might do it for 5 years. I think a guy to compare him to is Carlos Beltran.
5. Who would have ever thought our bullpen would be our biggest question mark?
FIVE THOUGHTS ABOUT THE AL CENTRAL
1. I'm sick of the Indians being the fashionable pick every year.
2. The White Sox did nothing but get older. This team has about 1 or 2 years left, and then Konerko, Thome, Dye, and Pierzynski are going to be done.
3. The Tigers basically have the same team that was predicted to score 1000 runs last year. There pitchers are all either hurt or insane. But this team could win 95 games, or 75???
4. The Royals . . . . Screw the Royals.
5. The central will be very competitive. I think the key is to never find yourself 7,8,or 9 games out early in the season.
FIVE THOUGHTS ABOUT THE AL
1. The AL East has 3 teams as good as anybody in baseball. That will create some big series along the way. Get ready to hear about the Yankess and Red Sox and the 19 epic battles they will have.
2. The AL West is garbage top to bottom. The Angels will start their decline. I'm sick of hearing about A's GM Billy Beane. What has his moneyball theory done? The Rangers again will have a great offense and no pitching. Who's running that team Mike D'Antoni?
3. What's it like to be the Blue Jay's and Orioles, and know you have no chance for success?
4. Can we stop talking about Joba Chamberlain until he becomes a decent starter or closer. Until then he's a middle reliever who had a lot of bugs on him in a playoff game. He also drinks and drives.
5. Can Tampa Bay keep up with the Yankees and Red Sox?
FIVE THOUGHTS ABOUT THE NL
1. Doesn't the NL want home field advantage in the World Series? They haven't won an all star game since 1996.
2. I love the fact that the Met's choke every year to the Phillies. I love it even more that both teams know that.
3. I love the fact that the Cubs will never win, no matter what they do.
4. Manny Ramirez will piss off everybody but Dodgers fans
5. The Pirates have not been above .500 since 1992.
THREE THOUGHTS ABOUT MLB
1. I love the fact that we continue to call it the World Series.
2. I think baseball is really worried about what's going to happen financially when some of these teams are basically eliminated by June, July in this economy. You might see some small crowds. The Pirates and Royals play in late June. Who in their right mind would pay money to see that?
3. Steroids has been the biggest story in baseball for a decade. When we will start to trust these guys again?

All right time for my predictions. I will list each division and how many games behind the teams will finish. I did not go through and do that math to make sure it is mathematically possible. There are 2430 games each year, in case you are wondering.

AL EAST AL WEST AL CENTRAL
Yankees Angels Twins
Red Sox 4 GB A's 6 GB Indians 3 GB
Rays 5 GB Rangers 12 GB Tigers 4 GB
Blue Jays 11 GB Mariners 14 GB White Sox 7 GB
Orioles 29 GB Royals 12 GB

NL EAST NL WEST NL CENTRAL
Philles Dodgers Cubs
Marlins 1 GB Diamonbacks 5 GB Cardinals 1 GB
Mets 2 GB Rockies 8 GB Brewers 6 GB
Atlanta 16 GB Giants 10 GB Astros 10 GB
Washington 22 GB Padres 25 GB Reds 15 GB
Pirates 19 GB

PLAYOFFS
Yankees defeat the Twins in 5 games
Red Sox sweep the Angels

Yankees beat the Red Sox in 6 games

Dodgers defeat the Marlins in 4 games
Cubs beats the Phillies in 6 games

Dodgers beat Cubs in 5 games

Yankees beat the Dodgers in 5 games to win the world series.

Vegas

I've been putting off blogging about my trip to Vegas. I wanted to make sure I had soaked it all in, and let it digest, and then shit it all out.

I went to Las Vegas with 11 other people. If you are scoring at home it was 3 couples, and 4 single or claiming to be single guys, and 1 single girl. It was a surprise birthday party for 1 of our friends. We surprised him at the airport by just being there. He knew him and his girlfriend were going, but not the other 9.

This was my first trip to Vegas, so I wasn't fully sure what to expect. I've heard stories, and stories, and stories. Each person you mention to, that you're going to Vegas, you'll get advice, on this and that. But I am a person who lives life in excess. I always want more. When I have a party I don't invite some of my friends I invite all of them. I always like things bigger and better. So I figured Vegas would be a place to find excess, and I was right.

Growing up in Minnesota has its limits. We know what to expect. But when you're in Las Vegas the sky's the limit. Like I mentioned I went with 10 other people. I think we all went home with a slightly different experience too. I don't think this is possible anywhere else I've been. I was there with my pregnant wife. Together we spent $700 over the course of 3 days. I was expecting to spend $1000, so I was pleased to come home with money. I had a friend there that met a guy from his college there. And they together spent over $10,000 in 3 days. And that might be low. The friend is worth 20 million dollars I guess. But what they experienced was a lot different than what I experienced. So that was amazing to me.

The fact is that there is no end to the party. At home here you could not spend that kind of money. I spent $250 in downtown Anoka once before Thanksgiving. I thought that was excessive. But that barely gets you in the door at some places in Vegas. There was the night club that some of the guys went to that had the $60 cover charge. On the flip side of it, you can go the opposite way too. Some people chose not to drink as much, and play poker all night. I'm not sure if they had as much fun as the other guys, but who am I to decide? I don't know, and that's what's great is you can do as much or as little as you'd like to enjoy yourself.

What I noticed was how well Vegas operates. Obviously they've been doing this everyday for the last 50 years. So they've had some practice. But they operate so efficiently with so much thought into everything. Everyone tells you that you get free drinks in the casino. No one mentions that you sit there for 5-10 minutes gambling while they're grabbing your "free" drink. The word strip actually means something. Everything, and I mean everything happens on the strip. It's on the outside that you see the garbage men, the vendors, the taxi's. These places do such a great job of making sure you only see what you need to see. I'm sure all of that came with time, but it was cool to see how everything operates so efficiently.

Thinking back on Vegas, I think of a few of things. Yes I want to go back. Preferably when my wife is not pregnant. Secondly how easy it would be to lose control there if you're not careful. I also think about how lame things will seem for a while at home compared to Vegas. At the same time I think about how you could not do that every weekend and stay sane. I think about how surreal everything is walking down the street. You're walking, drinking a beer and soaking it all up. You're in Las Vegas. The city of sin, the entertainment capital of the world. I can't imagine many places being more fun.

Las Vegas is a city that lends you a hand in having fun. Most places you go you have to find the fun. Las Vegas surrounds you in fun.

Hopefully we'll go back again next year!

What's Worse

Michael is still in the news this week as he has appeared to accept a construction job. But there is another NFL player in the news and his headlines don't appear to be as big a deal. The NFL player I'm talking about is Donte' Stallworth. The reason he's in the news is because he has actually killed a man.
Michael Vick killed dogs and ESPN basically devoted an entire channel to the coverage of the investigation, trial, and now to his upcoming release. I don't think killing dogs is a good thing, but in the grand scheme of things it is no where near what Donte' Stallworth has done.
Donte Stallworth actually ended the life of a man. A crane worker going home from work. Stallworth was drinking and hit the man in the middle of the road. So one would assume that this would be front page news. I understand the Stallworth is no where near the player that Vick was or even probably is. But in my opinion neither is the crime. Vick's crime is no where near the crime that Stallworth committed. The difference in the crime should far outweigh the difference in the talent and visibility of the player.
This is an opinion I've always had. I've wondered why we've thought what Vick had done is the worst possible thing humanly possible. We've got players like Ray Lewis, and Leonard Little, and now Donte' Stallworth who have now killed people. Add in guys who have been involved in domestic violence, and drug charges and now we're talking about a lot of guys. So why have we pitted Vick as the anti-christ? Media people talk about how teams can possibly think about adding Vick due to the public relations hit they would take with their fans. But we would all love to have Ray Lewis playing middle linebacker for our team.
